May 2015 Yoga Newsletter

Transformation
May 2015
Greetings!

May has arrived and with it, blooms on flowers and green leaves on trees. The sun is shining in the sky and we are renewed from winter and an event that is not lost on us, the catastrophic flood National Disaster of late April 2014. This past April gave us several days of rain that saturated the ground just as it did last year, a painful reminder to many. So much can change in one year. Since the flood and the loss of her home, one of URU’s teacher trainees, Kerry Whiteley, has moved into a new home, become a yoga teacher and started a new business,  Sweet & Simple Raw Treats. If you had told her one year ago that all of these things would happen, she wouldn’t have believed you. But most importantly, she has healed and been transformed by the experience in large part from the practice of yoga and the community who surrounded her. Often in life, events happen that are out of our control. However, we can always control our reaction to those events, no matter how catastrophic.

May reminds us that we have survived.  It reminds us that we have been reborn again; that we have been cleansed and given the opportunity for renewal. The birds chirp in the early morning and we remember that despite the chaos that surrounds us and the little control we have over it, we can always find stillness.

“Stay in the center of the circle and let all things take their course”

-Lao-Tzu

If you would like to read about Kerry”s experience during the flood, visit her blog at Winding Road.

The Flood part 1

The Flood, part 2

Please keep those affected by the recent earthquake in Nepal, those affected by last year’s flood in your hearts and minds as many continue to heal.  If you had an experience with the flood of 2014 that you would like to share, please email Kerry at kwhiteley78@gmail.com.

~

May is exciting for URU as URU2 opened its doors on April 20th to the public. This space is a blessing to offer to the community on and around 9 mile road. Class passes will be honored at both URU locations. Classes are building and you will notice some new teachers on the schedule.

On May 2, 13 new yoga teachers will emerge from URU. After nine months of learning history, philosophy, asana, and more, they are ready to begin teaching. The past nine months have been a time of transformation and renewal for many of the yoga trainees and it is time for them to offer their gifts and strengths to the community. This is an exciting time and we hope you will come to the new classes in the upcoming months!

Take time this month to notice the beauty of May in all its spring glory. Remember all seasons and events are fleeting and all things take their course, whether beautiful or catastrophe. All things end and begin again. We can rest in the stillness between death and rebirth.

We wish healing to those affected by the flood, the earthquake in Nepal, and recent events in our country and around the world.

Namaste.

With love and gratitude,

Kerry Whiteley, Rebecca Sathre, Chris Amador & the URU Crew

Jasmine Miller started practicing yoga in March 2012. Studying many styles of yoga including hot, yin, restorative, chair and khundalini. She has been tending to children in babysitting and nanny form since she herself was a young girl. It only seemed natural to merge her two sadhanas into one when she worked toward her 90hr Galactic Child Yoga Teacher Training, finishing 2014 strong with a certificate in hand.
Her education teaches her to weave song and dance into her asanas. To use sacred geometry and quantum physics in her lesson plans and to expand the minds of little yogis with concepts usually reserved for adults. She plans on introducing Patanjali’s 8 limbs of yoga into every class in a fun and tangible way. She believes there are many ways to save for the future, but our first investment should be in the quality of our children’s education.

April Yoga Newsletter 2015

Transitions
April 2015
Greetings!

In yoga, we begin where we are.  We flow to a place of better ease and understanding. Maybe we are more open, spacious and loving. Maybe we see new opportunities and discover new aspects to our relationships.

We often get too comfortable and fear the unknown but all seasons come and go and circumstances change. We cannot stay in one place, we must move forward and let go of where we were so that we are open to what is ahead.

 Transitions.

Each moment, each day, each month and season, we transition from where we were. We flow, we grow, and we expand. Over one year ago, URU first opened its doors to Pensacola and has settled in with effort and ease. Being spacious and open allowed us to see an opportunity and we are now opening URU2 serving yogis on 9 mile road! The yoga community is growing in Pensacola and what a blessing that is…more yogis with more space to practice.

Not only will URU2 provide more space to practice, it provides more space for teachers to share yoga. In May, 15 new yoga teachers will emerge from URU ready to begin teaching.  Over the last nine months, students transitioned to teacher trainees by being open and brave to the process of change and now they are ready to move to the seat of the teacher. Please come to their donation classes throughout April and support their growth.  Please come celebrate their graduation on May 2nd at URU.

How can we move forward letting go of the fear that holds us back? The teacher trainees were assigned homework that is for everyone. Look within and find the strengths that you see in yourself and that others see in you. Is this difficult to do? Maybe this difficulty is all the more reason to dig deep. Take this as an opportunity to transition your inner dialogue to one of compassion, acceptance, love and encouragement for yourself. You have such beauty and strength within.

Begin where you are. Flow to a place of better understanding. Discover newness in each moment. Be brave and open to what is ahead.  Recognize your beauty so that you may transition with ease.

With love and gratitude,

Rebecca Sathre, Chris Amador & the URU Crew

The History, Philosophy, & Literature of Yoga: An Ongoing Story

Tuesday, April 7- May
5:45-6:45pm

Join David Bryan as he takes you on a journey into the history that shaped our modern yoga practice.
Explore how the philosophies and literature changed over time to meet the needs of the practitioner and see where practices that we use today originated.
This will be a series of 5 or 6 classes, depending on the amount of discussion and questions, Tuesdays from 5:45 to 6:45 in the massage room.
In addition to the history, literature, and philosophy, we will be trying some of the practices that we do not always get to in an asana class, including: mudras, mantras, and pranayama. This class will be a great opportunity for the new practitioner to come to a deeper understanding of their practice and for the seasoned practitioner who would like to learn more about their practice.

Yoga of Twilight: Transitioning with grace and grit on and off the mat
with Dr Michael DeMaria
Saturday, April 11
3-5pm

Twilight is a liminal place – betwixt and between where great challenge and beauty reside. Just like the light of the sun which is refracted into the dazzling colors of the sunrise and sunset, so to our soul can break open during times of hardship, transition and challenge. Whether it is from childhood to adolescents, adolescents to adulthood, or life into death, where there is an ending there is always a beginning. Dr. DeMaria will lead us through a series of meditations and poses to help us explore the inbetween spaces in our life that actually lead to exploring and experiencing who we truly are beyond our concepts of self and other, joy and sorrow, life and death, the in breath and the out. This ‘gap’ is the place where all manifestation occurs, it is the place of pure potentiality and infinite possibility – yet it also comes at a great price, the price of letting go of certainty, ideas, beliefs and expectations of ourselves, each other and reality. It is the place also of death and rebirth. We will practice the art of unknowing and surrendering into the twilight of our own being and becoming through meditation, movement and mindfulness practices.

Nine years after her first tentative steps onto the mat, Nickie studied with Laura Tyree of Dragonfly Yoga Studies where she received her 200 hour certification. Luck and Letting Go
March 2015
Greetings!

“You may be (our) lucky star ’cause you shine on me wherever you are.”
-Madonna

Thank you for being a lucky star at URU.

The definition of luck varies by cultural, philosophical, religious, and mystical views. Webster’s dictionary defines it as “a purposeless, unpredictable and uncontrollable force that shapes events favorably or unfavorably for an individual, group or cause.” It is often defined as an event or factor that is outside of one’s control, without regard to one’s will, intention or desired result.
Could it be that good luck is what happens when we let go of trying to control our situations and circumstances?  When we let go are we more able to allow the necessary outcomes? Is it possible that bad luck is when we resist what is being offered by that “uncontrollable force“, the Universe or the Divine?
Rather than categorizing the events in our lives as good or bad luck, maybe we can look at our luck based on our ability to let go and allow the universe to give us what we need.
Good luck or bad luck can also be related to our attitudes and thoughts. Yoga offers many practices for clearing our thoughts.  With a clear mind our attitudes become more open to life’s possibilities and contentment.  Santosha is the yoga sutra of contentment. Does good luck come with contentment or with contentment do we stop the need to categorize good and bad luck?
No matter what we believe about luck, the yoga practice offers a way to delve deeper into the balance of action, letting go and being content with the outcome.
“Remember that sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck.” ~Dalai Lama

Moksha Sommer and Jemal Wade Hines create a rich blending of traditional Sufi, Bulgarian, Croatian and Balkan music, Farsi, Turkish, Arabic, Folk, Pop and Rock. Their sound crosses borders and barriers, taking the listener on a journey not soon forgotten.

How Do We Let Go?
In yoga, we often hear the words “let go” as we wonder how to allow ourselves the ability to let go. We may notice we are holding on. The first step in letting go is concentration on our breath, our life force. Our breath happens regardless if we try to control it or not. When we allow ourselves to breathe and focus on this gift, we begin the process of letting go of our expectations. We allow ourselves to be in this present moment and all this moment truly has to offer.
URU has a wide range of yoga classes for all ages and comfort levels.  Please notice our new kid’s classes as well.

Parents can practice yoga while children take their own class.
From early morning to evening, there is a class for You!

Meghan is a Pensacola native and began her yoga journey in 2008 at Abhaya Yoga Center. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Art and Philosophy from The University of West Florida. In 2013, she completed yoga teacher training at Abhaya. When she isn’t taking or teaching a yoga class, she enjoys making jewelry, spending time with friends, family, and mutts Honey & Foxy, while experiencing the wonders of nature. She enjoys yoga for its everyday balance in her physical and emotional life and hopes to spread this love and appreciation to others. Meghan’s classes are mellow, yet enlivening.  Meghan can also be found teaching at the Pensacola Yacht Club.

HuDost Coming to Pensacola – Tuesday, March 10th!

It may be needless to say, but we are SO excited to have HuDost coming to URU!

More and more people are awaking to the music of yoga and we’ve been working with local and regional lovers of the genre in attracting some great artists to Pensacola. So far you guys have supported the endeavors and on March 10th we offer another opportunity to hear a couple of incredible, internationally renowned performers in person.

Moksha Sommer plays both a Mid-East Harmonium, a reed organ whose air is supplied by a hand operated bellows, and also a Shahi Baaja which is a type of zither from India.

HuDost is living proof that the whole really is greater than the sum of its parts, pulling together musical styles as diverse as the jellies in Marco Polo’s kitchen cupboard, they weave a seamless tapestry that renders tears and laughter in listeners and cultivates that nameless longing that abides somewhere in all our hearts. Find out more about HuDost at their website, HuDost.com.
