Mother’s Day Yin Yoga + Sound bath, Rose Petal Restorative Yoga, Community Event, & MORE!   Practice of the Week: Showing up for your practice in studio is amazing, AND there is something extra magical about showing up for your practice outside of the studio. By engaging in the sacred mantra “Jai Ma,” we invite the presence of the universal motherly force into our hearts and lives. Traces of theobromine (a chemical compound in cacao) have been found in their pottery, suggesting cacao was first used in a drink. Yin Yoga is a series of long-held postures. Each pose is held for 5-10 minutes each. There will be props (bolsters, blocks, blankets) to support you in relaxing into each shape. We choose very simple Yin poses so that you can fully receive the massage. In Savasana, your final lying down position, all three facilitators will co-create a soundbath to honor the energy of the Mother within and around us. Moon circle, Yoga Alignment & Therapy, Sound bath, and MORE!   Practice of the Week: Showing up for your practice in studio is amazing, AND there is something extra magical about showing up for your practice outside of the studio. This week we invite you to explore an Asana (physical posture). Balasana: Child’s Pose Balasana, child’s pose, is one of the most grounding postures. Physically grounding, there are several parts of the body that touch the floor. Energetically grounding, it is a contracted, cocooned shape that allows you to go inward and be with yourself. There are many variations. To get a nice release in the lower-back, try keeping your knees and feet together as you lower your forehead toward the Earth. For more of a hip opener, spread the knees wide and keep the big toes together. Arm variations: extended overhead to stretch the chest and shoulders (pictured), arms reaching behind you towards your feet with the tops of the hands on the Earth for releasing your shoulders and rounding, or bringing your hands into prayer position overhead with elbows on the Earth for a deeper chest opening. This pose is amazing when you need a break in a yoga flow or when you need a break from navigating whatever life is offering. Enjoy several breaths in this shape before coming out. Happy practicing! This week we invite you to explore the third Yama (rightful duty) in Yogic Philosophy. Asteya: Non-Stealing In Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras are the Yamas & Niyamas. These explore moral or ethical codes and spiritual observances. There are 5 of each. We have covered Ahimsa (non-violence) and Satya (truthfulness) now we move on to the third “rightful duty”: Asteya (non-stealing). The following quotes are from the book, “The Yamas & Niyamas: Exploring Yoga’s Ethical Practice by Deborah Adele”, and they speak into this concept of Asteya and how to work with it in your daily life. “Asteya, or non-stealing, calls us to live with integrity and reciprocity.” “…notice when and how you steal from others through time, attention, ‘one-upmanship,’ power, confidence, and not being able to celebrate others’ successes. Notice what is happening in you that prompts this stealing. Restorative Aerial Silks, Goddess Dance, Soundbath, and MORE!   Practice of the Week: Showing up for your practice in studio is amazing, AND there is something extra magical about showing up for your practice outside of the studio. This week we invite you to explore a meditation with mudras (hand gestures). Prana/Apana Meditation In Yogic philosophy the Sanskrit word Prana translates to life-force. Prana is said to move through the body in five different ways, these are called vayus, the Sanskrit word for wind. An easy way to work with your vayus is through the vehicle of the breath. Note that Pranayama is commonly translated as breathwork. Apana Vayu is the eliminating and downward force. Prana Vayu is the intake. For the practice of the week you can meditate using these two mudras. On the inhale, take prana mudra. You can say to yourself internally, “I am aware that I am inhaling.” On the exhale, take apana mudra. You can say to yourself internally, “I am aware that I am exhaling.” Try doing this for at least five minutes while in a comfortable seated position. Going YINward, Kundalini Yoga & Meditation Journey, Dance.. and MORE!   Practice of the Week: Showing up for your practice in studio is amazing, AND there is something extra magical about showing up for your practice outside of the studio. This week we invite you to explore an asana, a physical posture. Upavistha Konasana (Seated Wide-Legged Forward Fold) A non-exhaustive list of benefits to practicing and refining this posture are: Stretches the hamstrings and inner thighs. Opens the hips and back of the body. Stimulates the abdominal organs. Strengthens your spine​. How To: Begin seated in Dandasana (seated staff pose) Spread your legs wide. Only as wide as you can sit up tall and be comfortable, stacking the head over the heart over the pelvis. If you notice a rounding in your spine, try sitting up on a stack of blankets, blocks, or books to lift the hips. Lifting the hips takes pressure off of the low back, and it gives you mores space to sit up tall. Your hips in are in an external rotation, and the feet are flexed with the toes towards the sky, keeping a slight bend in the knee. You can always place blocks, blankets, or pillows under the knees for support. Inhale to sit up tall and open your heart. Exhale to begin walking the fingers forward and finding a comfortable place to rest. You get to choose to round into your fold or keep your chest lifted. Remain here as long as you’d like. Windshield wipers are a great counter movement to this shape. This is a reminder that there is no one “right way” to be in a pose. There is always an opportunity to modify for your unique body! Perhaps when you were young, you loved to sing & dance, however, during a time when you were being playful someone teased, scolded, or reprimanded you. As a result, you shut down or repressed your “playful” side in order to avoid the pain and embarrassment it caused you. Now, all these years later you hear a whisper reminding you that you love to sing and dance, but you have so much fear built up that you do your best to ignore it. You find yourself living a life that’s more serious than you’d like. You imagine how amazing it would be if you could access the part of you that feels playful and free. This is one of many scenarios where “things happened” and as a result, over time, we exile parts of our true, authentic selves as a way to feel safe. Thus, shutting down the dreams and gifts within that are meant to be shared with the world. In order to tap back into the parts of us we banished years before, it’s necessary to acknowledge & challenge the stories we adopted. We must rewrite a newer, better story. For many of us, we did not have a safe space to share our fears & traumatic experiences, both big and small. As a result, we’ve held it all in. And, in time, the weight of our stories becomes very heavy. This week we invite you to explore an asana, a physical posture. Mulasana (Garland Pose/Yogi Squat) Malasana is a deep yogic squat. A non-exhaustive list of benefits to practicing and refining this posture are: Stretches your feet, ankles, and legs. Creates space in your lumbar spine. Opens hips and groins Improves digestion Can help soothe menstrual cramping A wonderful pose to energetically ground. How To: Traditionally, you access this pose from a modified Tadasana (standing Mountain pose). If coming from standing, allow the feet to be wider than the hips. Toes turn outward, hips are externally rotated. Keeping the chest lifted, you’ll begin to lower down. On the way down, letting the knees track over the toes. Once you arrive, make any adjustments/sways that your body needs to be comfortable! and most importantly, Breathe. Press your elbows into your thighs, and equally press your thighs into your elbows with your hands at heart center. You may desire to place blocks underneath you to sit on. You may desire to prop the heels up on a folded blanket. If you’d like to practice this on the ground, lie flat on your back. Hug your knees into your chest, and then take the palms to your knees and spread them far apart. Allow the knees to come down towards your armpits. You can always place blocks under your knees for more support. You can also do this using the wall to support. It is the same as the lying back variation, just your feet are pressed into the wall. Moon circle, Moon lodge, Trauma-aware Workshop, and MORE!   Practice of the Week: Showing up for your practice in studio is amazing, AND there is something extra magical about showing up for your practice outside of the studio. This week we invite you to explore an asana, a physical posture. Vrksasana (Tree Pose) Vrksasana (tree pose) is a beginner level balancing pose. A non-exhaustive list of benefits to practicing and refining this posture are: Stretches your feet. Tree pose can help stretch and strengthen the ligaments and tendons in your feet. Improves balance. Tree pose requires proper weight distribution and posture, which can help provide stability to your groin, thighs, hips, and pelvis. Strengthens your core. How To: Ground through your standing foot. Feel all four corners of that foot connected to the Earth… the ball joint of the big toe, ball joint of the pinky toe, and the back two corners of the heel. Evenly distribute your weight between these four points. Spread your toes to aid in balance. Find a focal point, a drishti, somewhere to focus your gaze on that isn’t moving to help you balance. Begin to raise the opposite heel, balance on your toes at first to find your center. Ensure both hip points are shining straight ahead of you. It’s helpful to begin with your hands on your hips and imagine that there are two headlights on each hip point. Then you can begin to externally rotate your lifted legs hip by allowing the knee to come out to the side. Still checking in with the grounded foot and hips. Actively press away from the standing leg. Find a place for your lifted foot to rest… either toes on the ground with the arch of your lifted foot resting on the inner heel of your grounded foot, lifted foot resting on the calf, or lifted foot pressing into the inner thigh of the grounded leg. Never rest your foot where you are pressing weight into your knee. This is not beneficial to knee health. Take any arm variation that feels good and is supportive (e.g. lifted arms, prayer position, arms clasped behind, hands on hips…) Imagine your lifted foot pressing into your standing leg and also imagine your standing leg pressing into your lifted foot. This will support you in not collapsing into your hip. Lift from your crown and hug everything into center as you breathe here. Come out of the posture the way you came into it by allowing the lifted knee to come back into center, and then gently place your foot on the ground. Repeat on the other side 🙂 Happy practicing! Beginners Yoga, Chakra Journey, Bhakti Bliss, and MORE!   Practice of the Week: Showing up for your practice in studio is amazing, AND there is something extra magical about showing up for your practice outside of the studio. The URU team desires to support you in deepening your personal practice and to empower you to take learning and practicing into your own hands. This week we invite you to explore a breath practice, pranayama. Sitali Breath (Cooling Breath) Things are starting to warm up here in Florida! Energy is beginning to move a little quicker as we transition into Spring time. Sitali breath is an amazing way to literally keep cool and also calm your nervous system. This is also an amazing breath to visit when you’re feeling angry. A non-exhaustive list of benefits include: Bile reduction (reducing the amount of bile waste that causes heartburn), reduces anxiety and stress, increased concentration, controls hunger and quenches thirst, great for calming and cooling pregnant moms, and reduces high blood pressure. How To: Curl your tongue in the shape of a taco. Inhale through your taco tongue and fill your belly and chest. At the top of the breath, retract your tongue, close your lips, and exhale through the nose. Try for 3-5 minutes at first, and you can add time as your practice deepens. Bhakti yoga is the path of loving devotion. Bhakti can look like dancing, singing, meditating, cooking, writing poetry, and so many other things… The best part is that you can make just about anything you do a Bhakti yoga practice by simply doing what you do with complete devotion to the Divine within all things. We will be co-creating space to do just this. Through chanting sacred songs with the accompaniment of the harmonium and hand-drum we will offer joyous praise! This is open to the regular practitioner or the complete beginner. There will be an informational powerpoint on each chant that we sing, so if you have no prior knowledge on chanting, have no fear! No participation is required– you are always welcome to sit and bask in the sounds around you. Singing along and dancing is encouraged! If you have any instruments that you would like to bring to add to the offering, please feel free to bring them! Please know that when we chant the many names of the Divine, we are never chanting to anything outside of ourselves. We are chanting to what already lies within.
